Project summary - Themed Playground design

Absolute Play worked with Mount Pleasant Primary School to deliver a large-scale themed playground design and installation, creating a vibrant destination play space packed with physical challenge, imaginative play and visual interest.

The completed scheme brought together a striking pirate theme, colourful surfacing, natural timber equipment, themed structures, daily mile elements and varied zoning to create a playground children genuinely want to spend time in. The proposal included a substantial pirate-themed feature scheme with extensive surfacing and supporting play elements across the wider site.

The brief

The school wanted to redevelop their outdoor area into a far more engaging and imaginative environment that could support a broad mix of play styles and age groups. The opportunity was not simply to add equipment, but to create a memorable destination playground with a strong identity, encouraging movement, creativity, social interaction and outdoor enjoyment.

A themed approach quickly emerged as a key direction, helping the space feel exciting, cohesive and different from a standard school playground.

Our solution

Design approach:

The scheme was carefully zoned to create different experiences across the playground. The pirate ship formed the clear visual focal point, surrounded by flowing surfacing, themed features and linked activity spaces. Physical challenge, imaginative role play, quieter gathering spaces and movement routes were all intentionally blended together.

The surfacing palette was equally important to the design — using blue, buff and natural tones to help reinforce the playful coastal feel and visually tie the entire playground together. The concept visuals show how surfacing, equipment and pathways were used to create a cohesive themed environment rather than isolated play elements.

Materials & surfacing

The materials palette was selected to achieve a balance between visual impact, durability and long-term practicality.

Equipment materials used for a Themed Playground Design & Install

• Natural timber construction

• HDPE themed panels and decorative detailing

• Stainless steel play elements

• Rope climbing components and balancing features

Surface types used

Play Grade Artificial Grass Overlay across large areas of the scheme.

Sand Tone Wetpour Surfacing beneath key equipment zones for safety surfacing and visual warmth.

New Coloured Tarmac Surfacing using blue, sand tones and black to create pathways, visual contrast and themed flow across the site.

These materials were chosen to provide a hardwearing, low maintenance playground that still felt exciting, playful and visually rich.

Installation

This was a substantial playground redevelopment involving extensive equipment installation, surfacing works and site integration across a large footprint.

The installation included significant tarmac works, artificial grass overlays, wetpour surfacing and the integration of multiple themed play zones within one cohesive scheme. Extensive preparation, edging, drainage consideration and pathway connections formed part of the wider surfacing package.

The outcome

Mount Pleasant Primary School now benefits from a truly distinctive themed playground design that blends physical challenge, imagination, movement and social interaction into one exciting destination space.

The completed environment delivers a strong sense of identity, varied play experiences and a playground packed with reasons for children to explore, return to and engage with the outdoors every day.
