Project summary - 4G MUGA install
Mount Pleasant School wanted to transform an existing tarmac MUGA into a high-quality 4G sports pitch to encourage wider participation in sport and create a facility that could also be hired by the local community outside of school hours. We delivered a full 4G MUGA upgrade, complete with new surfacing, shock pad, steel football goals, rebound fencing and a dedicated anti-slip running track to create a flexible, multi-zone sports space.

The brief
The school wanted to convert their simple tarmac MUGA into a modern 4G pitch that would encourage more pupils to take part in sport across the school day, while also creating an income-generating facility for community use. The opportunity was to significantly improve play quality, safety and durability, while introducing separate activity zones and upgrading the perimeter to support a wider range of sporting activities.
Our solution
We installed a full-size 4G artificial sports surface over the existing MUGA and incorporated a performance shock pad to improve player safety and comfort. A dedicated anti-slip sprint running track was created alongside the main pitch, while rebound barrier fencing was introduced to form clear activity zones and support multiple sports at the same time. Heavy-duty fixed steel football goals were supplied and installed, and the existing basketball posts were carefully retained and relocated where possible to maximise the usable sports provision on site.
Key equipment:
24mm 4G artificial sports turf with inlaid sports line markings
ProPlay 20mm sports shock pad
Fixed heavy-duty steel football goals
3m high half rebound mesh fencing with vehicle access gates
Thermoplastic 4-lane 50m sprint running track
Design approach:
The layout was carefully planned to maximise usable space and allow multiple activities to run at the same time. Rebound fencing was positioned to create clear zones for football, multi-sport and sprint activities, helping staff manage sessions safely and giving pupils defined, high-quality sports areas throughout the day. Additional line markings were added to the pitch (dashed lines) to form 4 quarters, this helped allowed for cross pitch play and division.
Inclusion & accessibility
The shockpad system improves impact absorption, supporting safer play for a wider range of users.
Clear zoning helps create structured spaces that support pupils who benefit from defined activity areas.

Materials & surfacing
Equipment materials used
Powder-coated and galvanised steel goals and fencing for durability and long-term performance.

Surface type used
24mm polypropylene 4G artificial sports turf with sand infill.
ProPlay 20mm sports shock pad beneath the surface.
Thermoplastic anti-slip surfacing for the running track.

Why these were chosen
The 4G surface provides a durable, low-maintenance playing surface suitable for intensive school and community use. The shock pad significantly improves player comfort and safety, while the thermoplastic track delivers a high-grip, clearly defined sprint area for PE and training sessions.
The outcome
The school now benefits from a modern, high-performance 4G MUGA that supports daily PE, structured sports delivery and after-school activities. The upgraded facility also provides a professional-standard space suitable for community hire, helping the school maximise use of their site while promoting active lifestyles for pupils and the wider community.
