Wetpour is a rubber surface laid on site. Its colour choices make it useful for patterns, activity spaces and distinguishing one part of a playground from another.
Consider it where the surface forms part of the design, such as an EYFS area with different play zones. The specified thickness and construction must suit the equipment and supporting ground.
Ask: What preparation is included, how will the edges be finished, and what maintenance is needed?

Bonded rubber mulch combines rubber pieces with a binder to create a connected surface. Its texture can suit timber equipment and settings where a less formal appearance is preferred.

Artificial grass can suit role play, outdoor learning and areas where natural grass struggles with repeated use. It offers a green finish without mowing, but still needs cleaning, care and checks to its joints and edges.
Where impact protection is required beneath equipment, the complete system needs to be specified accordingly. The appearance of the grass does not establish its suitability for a fall area.
Ask: What base and drainage are included, and does this location need a tested shock-absorbing system?
Which surface offers the best value?
Artificial grass is often the most affordable option, bonded rubber mulch typically sits in the middle, and wetpour is usually the most expensive. However, ground conditions, access and the level of impact protection required can change that order.
Artificial grass can offer excellent value for general play and outdoor learning. Where impact protection is needed beneath equipment, a suitable tested system can incorporate shock-absorbing tiles or pads beneath the grass.
Bonded rubber mulch offers a versatile mid-range option for a variety of play spaces, including areas around timber equipment. The preparation and thickness required will affect the installed price.
Wetpour generally carries the highest initial cost. We recommend using it selectively where its impact-absorbing performance and continuous finish best suit the design, rather than specifying it across an entire playground by default. Other surfaces can also provide impact protection when correctly specified.
Look beyond the installation price
The best value also depends on maintenance, repairs and eventual replacement. Wetpour can shrink or lift at the edges, requiring repairs, and removing it at the end of its life can be particularly expensive.
