Project summary - Reception Playground Design and Install
Absolute Play worked with Colnbrook C of E Primary School to deliver a refreshed Reception Playground Design and Install, modernising the Reception outdoor environment and creating a much more cohesive, natural-feeling space aligned with current Early Years provision.
The scheme introduced a broad mix of imaginative, sensory, active and social play experiences, helping transform the environment through stronger zoning, richer materials and a more purposeful outdoor learning offer.

The brief
The existing Reception space already offered a good base, but it had become dated and no longer fully reflected modern EYFS practice or curriculum delivery.
The school wanted the environment to feel more natural, engaging and better connected, whilst incorporating a wider range of play experiences and outdoor learning opportunities. The brief centred around refreshing the space rather than completely reinventing it — introducing stronger visual identity, improved zoning and a much richer mix of elements to support imaginative play, messy play, movement, communication and collaborative learning.
Our solution
Key Equipment:
• Hexagonal Timber Shelter with Integrated Seating
• Hexagonal Tree Surround Bench
• Two Tier Timber Stage
• Play Shop & Timber Shop Front
• Large Mud Kitchens
• Adventure Play Blocks / Loose Parts Play
• Artificial Grass Graphics — Hopscotch, Snake, Shapes & Noughts & Crosses
• Full Thermoplastic Roadway with Roundabout, Zebra Crossings & Parking Bays
• Curved Seating Areas
• Natural gathering & social spaces.

Design approach:
The design focused on creating a more natural, layered and curriculum-led Reception environment, bringing together movement, role play, messy play, communication and outdoor learning within one coherent space.
Clearer zoning helped organise the area into distinct but connected experiences — with roadway and movement play, role play, social interaction, performance, loose parts exploration and quieter gathering spaces all woven through the layout. Natural timber features, softer surfacing tones and organic forms helped move the environment away from a harder, more fragmented feel towards a warmer and more contemporary EYFS setting.

Materials & surfacing
Equipment materials used
• Natural timber shelters, benches, staging and role play resources
• Loose parts / adventure play elements
• Steel bow top fencing
• Timber social and gathering features.
Surface types used
• Premium Artificial Grass with integrated educational graphics.
• EPDM Rubber Play Mulch creating softer, more natural active play zones.
• Tarmac roadway surface supporting bikes, scooters and roadway learning.
• Resin Bound Gravel providing sensory texture and visual contrast.
• Thermoplastic roadway markings including crossings, parking bays and roundabout features.
These materials were selected to create a practical all-weather environment with stronger visual warmth, improved durability and a much more contemporary EYFS feel.

Installation
This project involved substantial preparatory works, including removal of old wetpour, artificial grass, pathways, decking, gazebo structures and outdated surfacing before the new environment could be formed. Significant groundwork, surfacing and reconfiguration works were required to reshape and modernise the space.
Existing trees, boundaries and the established layout also required careful integration to ensure the new design complemented the character of the original space whilst delivering a clear step forward in functionality and appearance.
The outcome
Colnbrook C of E Primary School now benefits from a refreshed and highly versatile Reception outdoor learning environment that feels more natural, better organised and much more aligned with contemporary EYFS delivery.
The space successfully combines movement, role play, outdoor learning, social interaction and creative exploration through a wide variety of engaging features — helping create a richer everyday experience for both children and staff.
