The most effective muddy school playground solutions address both the surface and the ground beneath it. Worn grass may need a more durable finish, while persistent puddles need the cause of poor drainage investigated before resurfacing.

Start by looking at where the problem appears:
At gates and narrow paths: repeated footfall can wear away the grass.
Around popular equipment: concentrated use can leave exposed ground.
In low spots after rain: water may collect where it cannot drain away effectively.
Take photographs after rainfall and note how long standing water remains. A muddy entrance and a waterlogged field may need very different solutions.
Muddy school playground solutions - Will new surfacing solve it?
It can help, provided the specification addresses the site conditions. A permeable surface alone will not cure waterlogged ground beneath it.
Options may include artificial grass, wetpour or bonded rubber mulch, with suitable ground preparation and drainage work where needed. The choice should reflect the activities, equipment and access requirements.

At Alderman Pounder in Nottingham, the brief included reducing mud carried onto the playground and making the space beneath a shelter more usable.
We installed resin-bound gravel beneath the shelter and artificial grass around it, connecting to the main playground. Different finishes were selected for different uses within one space.

Do you need to replace the whole area?
Not always. Improving a heavily used route or the surface around equipment may address the main issue while retaining grass elsewhere.
